Propecia (Finasteride) Dosage
The dose of Finasteride (Propecia or Proscar)
) will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's
orders or the directions on the label. The following information
includes only the average dose of Finasteride. If your dose
is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you
to do so:
For oral dosage form (tablets):
Propecia (Finasteride) Dosage
Propecia (Finasteride
1mg) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair
loss (androgenetic alopecia) in MEN ONLY. The recommended
dosage is 1mg orally once a day. Propecia may be administered
with or without meals. In general, daily use for three months
or more is necessary before benefit is observed. Continued
use is recommended to sustain benefit, which should be re-evaluated
periodically. Withdrawal of treatment leads to reversal of
effect within 12 months.
Proscar (Finasteride
5mg) is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic benign
prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate
to:
- Reduce the risk of acute urinary retention
- Reduce the risk of the need for surgery including transurethral
resection of the prostate (TURP) and prostatectomy.
The recommended dose is 5 mg orally once a day. Proscar can
be administered alone or in combination with the alpha-blocker
doxazosin. It may be administered with or without meals. No
dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment
or for the elderly.
Changing Propecia (Finasteride) Dosage
You can take finasteride anytime during the daytime, but
best to keep taking it the same time each day. The dose should
be 1mg, such as Propecia. A slightly higher dose of 1.25mg,
for those that cut the Proscar pill into quarters, is not
a problem. Increasing it to an even higher dose clearly produces
more side effects. A dose lower than 1mg is less effective.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible.
However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the
missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do
not double doses.
